Not only does the Pamlico River offer Washington (known to locals as
Little Washington), it offers a delightful side trip up Bath Creek to the
oldest town in the state. Bath has a state-owned dock that's free (no
electricity or water)and is an easy walk to a state visitor's center. The
dock is on the east side of the creek just south of the only marina on the
creek. Washington also is a pleasant place to visit and has new city-owned
docks with 30 amp electricity, water and a free pump out. The city docks
cost 75 cents a foot per day and are right down town, near shops and
restaurants. You can also drop the hook off the docks.
New Bern is larger and busier and has more shops and eateries. It too is
a great place to visit. It has a couple of large marinas where transients
are welcomed and one (Sheraton) is within walking distance of the town.
