Hi all,
An important point to remember is that there is often a significant
difference in the performance of older analog cells and newer digital cells,
and what may surprise some is often the older analog units outperform their
newer counterparts! I have a 18 year-old ancient Panasonic "transportable"
analog cell phone. My cell service provider won't discount analog service
since they want it to go away. The digital service is much more profitable
for them, they can compact hundreds of signals on digital equipment where
analog gear may only handle a dozen or so calls. And, to be fair, the newer
digital cell phones have all the cute little gizmo's like TV screens and
other bells and whistles that some have found they can't do without.
However I have found along the Northern California coast, that my old analog
cell outperforms newer digital sets hands down! I get "full bars" across
the signal strength display at locations where digital cells get no signal
at all. This is of course, highly dependent on the individual service
provider, how aggressively they have upgraded their sites to digital and
what feeling of "commitment" they have toward the older analog service. But
until I can no longer get reliable service from my old analog cell phone,
I'm going to use it and marvel at the crystal clarity of its audio compared
to the noisy Donald Duck sounds that seem to emanate from digital cells.
So to compare apples with apples, rather than oranges, you need to know if
you're comparing digital to digital or digital to analog; the two are quite
different.
