Advances in medicine and social attitudes have redefined the definition of
"old". Sixty five, which used to be considered the portal to old age is now
considered middle age and, in fact, near the prime of life. How else to explain
how geezers like Ronald Reagan get elected to the most demanding job in the
country or near geezers like Harrison Ford and Sean Connery get the nubile girls
in the adventure movies. Old age is now considered to start at 70+ with those
below 75 considered to be "young old", those from 75 to 85 being "middle old"
and those above 85 being "old old." I'm well into geezerdom myself and still
sail in local races, trawler up and down the East coast, and do all the
maintenance on my boat myself.
Incidentally, there is no manditory retirement age for merchant marine
skippers. Consider that the next time you see a supertanker or a tug with a an eight
barge tow bearing down on you.
