The recent posts re: fishing boats and our trawlers got me thinking
about the commercial fishing boats on the Great Lakes. In the haydays of
Great Lakes commercial fishing hundreds of these "fish tugs" were built by
various builders in Canada and the US to a similar design. Most are steel
full displacement hulls from 30' to 60' or so, with a single engine. The
decks are raised from bow to stern, a "pilothouse" with very small windows
barely a foot above deck. The raised deck rear house, with only a couple
large trap doors to set nets, give them an ungainly look. They were built
heavy for pretty much year round use with many of them using a length of
railroad track welded to the keel for grounding protection and ballast.
While certainly not beautiful, they were an example of form following
function for probably close to 100 years. Since the decline of commercial
fishing on the Great Lakes many of these boats have been pulled ashore and are
for sale. A few of them have been converted for pleasure use, with various
degrees of success.
