We left Solomons last Monday (after TrawlerFest) and are currently in
Coinjock, NC headed for Florida. Here is what we've seen so far:
1. Great Bridge lock was closed for part of a day for equipment
problems. Various bridges in the Norfolk/Portsmouth area were delayed
because of maintenance. There has been a lot of speculation at marinas
and anchorages that this is Isabel related.
2. The Dismal Swamp route is currently closed.
3. The Coast Guard reports that 800 aids to navigation have been
destroyed or displaced due to the storm.
4. There is a lot of wood debris along the ICW, especially in narrower
sections. I didn't think it was nearly as bad as the upper Chesapeake,
but you have to be careful.
5. I found two spots on the ICW along Currituck Sound where my depth
sounders read 6.8 feet within the channel. I have two separate sounders
and both responded with the same data. Another boat along the same
route found the same results. I would assume that some silting and
shoaling has occurred.
6. I've been told that there is no fuel available after Coinjock, NC
until South Carolina. I know that fuel is available in Coinjock because
I filled up today ($1.17/gallon) - just in case.
5. I was told tonight to be on the lookout for floating water tanks,
refrigerators, and other house debris over the remainder of North
Carolina. I assume that this is not a regular type of thing to watch
out for around here...
On the positive side, the weather has been cool, dry, and beautiful.
