    Frank, Hal, Arild, et al,

Having practiced law for 35 yrs I think I can ans your , (Frank's)
questions. I will do so parenthetically:

    >
I am wondering, if an individual is willing to "take
    > his chances" without insurance and he damages another's boat, is he likely
    > to be sued? If he has a "tremendous" insurance package, is he likely to
    be
    > sued? If he has a "bare minimum" insurance package, is he likely to be
    > sued?

In a word , YES. For the reason that I enunciated in my ans to Arilds post.
    ( Lack of personal responsibility.)

Are we really more concerned with being sued than "doing the right
    > thing". Are we forced to think that way?

Again , YES to both. We are forced to think that way due to the mind set in
this country that "I am not responsible for my own actions."

    >
    > Are we buying/paying for insurance coverage to "make it right" when an
    > accident happens, or is the insurance supposed to protect us from the
    "real
    > sharks of the sea" (lawyers?). If the latter, can we carry enough
    coverage
    > to do that? Do we invite the sharks by dangling bait if front of them?

    Again , YES to both.
I hasten to note your analogy is a bit broad. That would be TRIAL LAWYERS.
Secondly , as I mentioned yesterday, they are not the cause but the
symptom. They are taking full advantage , and promoting it, of the
proclivities those who want something for nothing. Actually the "shark"
analogy is good, for real sharks eat when food is dangled in front of them
and the same is true of TRIAL LAWYERS. Dangle the cause of action or have a
potential client come in with a , perceived, hurt and bingo!
    >
    > Of course the worst case scenario, loss of life, doesn't really have a
    > price, does it?

No it does not, but plaintifs feel that it does! I just love it when they
say ," it's not the money......" Yea right.
    >
    > I do not advocate sailing without insurance.

Don't do it. Ins. covers you when your boat sinks , salvage, or discharges
oil and the REAL SHARKS , EPA and their ilk come after you.
