Add one gallon plain bleach per 100 gallons fresh water and fill tanks.
Remove strainers from your faucets and run bleach water through every faucet
on the boat until you smell bleach. Let sit 4-12 hours, then pump tank
empty. Refill with fresh water and run through. You'll have to flush the
tank with fresh water maybe 3-4 times to get the chlorine smell out. You
should get all kinds of gunk out of the faucets; that's why you removed the
screens. If possible, it's always good to open the inspection port if you
have one and physically clean out the tank. Don't forget that if you have a
dock water hose hooked up to the boat and it's not used at least weekly,
it'll grow stuff inside as well. You can try the bleach treatment on it, but
I've never had good luck with this... just trash it and get a new one.
Maintenance: I usually try to keep enough water in the FW tanks for a
couple of day trips, then use it once a month and refill with fresh water.
That by itself should keep the water fresh. I also add Starbrite's water
conditioner.
