I saw the note from LRZeitlin regarding rpm on his Camano. I have a 3208 Cat
in my Portsmouth Downeast '30 and have been going around and around on the
rpm issue. Here is what I have learned so far. If you run the engine at a
lower rpm that specs recommend you do the following;
1. an imperfect burn of fuel in the cylinders
2. Unused fuel clogs cylinder walls and pistons and drains into the crankcase
and mixes with the engine oil
3. The lubricating properties of the oil are reduced
4. The cylinders are clogged and less lubricated
5. this results in excessive engine wear
The solution as explained to me is to run the engine at an rpm that is at
least 80% of recommended cruise rpm at all times.
