Water in the bilge really bugs me, even though I know it really shouldn't
(with a fiberglass boat). We have a 2 gallon Sears wet/dry vac on board
(the most important accessory a boat can have if it's also occupied by a
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, a dog notorious for shedding). Opening
the floor hatch and shoving the vacuum hose/pipe down in the bilge gets rid
of the last drop of water, at least until the next time it rains (it's an
    old boat....).

It's not a huge hassle, but it's not as easy as having a built-in pump do
the same job. But you would probably have to rig a manually-triggered
bilge pump to really get all, or at least most of the water out, because
you need to eliminate the tendency of a float-type switch to shut off the
pump before all the water is gone. And I don't know how you'd deal with
the fact that water in the outflow hose will drain back into the bilge when
    the pump shuts off.
