Christening
In May we christened our boat. Since the origins of the name Skinwalker are
Native American, we asked a group of Native Peoples' to provide blessings.
They purified the crew and vessel with smoke from burning sage. They
invited the spirits of the various directions and Mother Earth and Father
Sky to protect the vessel and be at one with wind and water. They then read
native poetry in there native tongue about sea travelers and blessings.
After the blessing, our guests, friends, were asked to assemble small (1")
prayer sachels. They were told each persons prayer sac was to be sacred to
each persons own religion, These were gathered and strung together and
hung in the boat. It was a thoughtful & meaningful start to our cruising
life with our trawler Skinwalker.
Somehow it was a comfortable bonding experience between us and the boat.
Hokie? Sounds like it I am sure, but for us and our friends it was very
nice. The party after was a complete blowout and the boat re-christened by
spills of many types of libations.
