TWL: How to enter my Harbor

    Hi Folks,

I am looking for a little advice. I boat in Lake Erie and recently
purchased my 1st trawler (65 Hatteras LRC). The entrance to our marina is
very narrow and is not protected by a breakwall. Wind from the North or
East causes waves to surge/break into the opening. The normal practice for
boaters here is to come in on plane and outrun the waves. Well, I went out
and came back for the first time this weekend and there was a light surge
caused by an east wind but didnt look very strong. I practiced some with
the surge on my stern and felt comfortable with how it handled
that. Rolled it up to 8 knots and began my entry. A surge hit the port
stern and pushed the boat dangerously into the rocks to port. By that time
I had the rudders hard over, port main forward and full throttle, starbord
full power and in reverse. We just missed buying the wall on port side but
the next suge tried to put us on the rocks starboard. Reversing the above
kept us off the rocks and we were then past the surge area.

I was surf entry trained by the navy and they always taught speed is needed
during this type of entry. Since the 65 is limited on speed that approach
won't work. In our harbor there is a fellow that runs a fishing charter
boat. 8 knot, round bilge type. I asked him yesterday about his approach
and he said "Everyone does it wrong coming in, they power up come through
at full throttle and if they get knoked off course they have no extra power
to help them get back on couse." He also said "the best way to enter is at
3 knots, right down the center, if a surge moves you you have time and
    power available to correct.

I have entered this channel many times with my 58 Yacht Fish and it takes a
little wheeling but is a safe ride. The LRC however was extremely unsafe
as I barely had command of the vessel. I put my crew through the most
harrowing experience they have ever had, saw 3 boys fishing at the opening
throw their rods down and run like heck.

As of that entry, current boat rules are that we will not enter period if
there is wind from North or East. That limits our boating severely.

Suggestions?? The slow approach may make sense but I would love some
feedback from you folks before I do an elstupido and just go try it.

    Thanks,

    Mike
