I became intrigued with the short description for the use of an
Alpha-Laval centrifugal pump for a fuel polishing system, so I went to
the net to try to learn more. What I discovered is that the company is
highly regarded for its commercial products, and makes a bewildering
variety and sizes of pumps. I could find nothing, capacity wise, for the
pleasure marine market.
There is no doubt in my mind that a fuel polishing system based on a 4
gal pump and a GCF-1 filter is effective, but I have seen 5 gallons of
solids removed from a 25 year old trawler tank (250 gal) that had clean
fuel! I don't think the fuel polishing system is going to be as effective
on a tank with solid crud as would a 100 GPH pump. In other words, the
Walbro/GCF combo works fine, assuming that your tanks do not have the
solids buildup, and are reasonably clean to start with.
For anyone that has had experience with an Alpha-Laval pump, what model
number and what GPH capacity are you using? What was your procurement
source and how much did it cost? How effective would you rate the system.
When I drained my fuel tanks last fall, I put in the plumbing for a
direct circulating and return polishing system, and I could very well use
a high capacity centrifugal pump, providing I can find the right one. I'd
welcome any suggestions on a centrifugal pump system as this blurb in the
recent TWD was the first one I had seen.
