The shut off unit is "armed ' by pulling on a handle that cocks a big
    spring.

The shut off is connected by a cable to the stop arm on the governor.

The gage units are all hooked up to a lantern battery in its own
waterproof case. Not ships electric , so it will work when nothing else
    is.

If any gage touches a preset contact , a tiny pin is pulled in the shut
off and wham the spring gives a mighty tug on the shutoff cable, securing
    the engine.

Should you wish to know WHY ? the engine was shut down , there is an
extra panel that can be purchased with lights and latching circuit. The
lantern bat is strong enough , even 2 years old to illuminate a tiny
light , that shows what happened.
Low oil pressure or level, high circ water temp , no sea feed , what
    ever you chose.

    Works for me!
