TWL: Temp. Gauge

I'm starting to wish that I hadn't started replacing instrument gauges.
First the new tachs drop out whenever revs drop below 1100rpm (I posted
this one a week or so ago, and I haven't figured it out yet). I also
replaced a voltmeter and temperature gauge, because they were sticking
badly. The temp. gauge will only read about 70deg, when it should be
reading about 170-180. The old one did read in this range, and all I
did was pop the old sticky one out and connect the new one. The lower
station reads properly, but the two gauges appear to be on separate
identical sensors in a T-fitting. Do temp sensors need to be matched to
the gauge? The new voltmeter works properly so at least I'm 1 for 4 now.

I think I've determined that the tachs do not run off the alternators,
since my new alternator which charges the house bank and runs the tachs
that are working does not have the alternator wire connected in the
harness, so I'm assuming the input for the tachs is the engine take-off
variety. Can anyone enlighten me as to how this works, and how it it
might be causing the new tachs to drop out at low rpm? Faria originally
though it might be the old alternator which charges the start battery
not supplying enough voltage at low rpm, but if it's not running off the
alternator, then I have to look somewhere else.
