    Peter,

I can only relate my experience with various brands installed on our
towboats. After long (and expensive) trial and error the following electronics seem to
    work best:

    1. VHF radio; ICOM for both installed and hand held, Hummingbirds for
throwaway handhelds-when you know you will probably lose it on a job. work well for a
    price
    2. GPS, (data only) Garmin 126-128 or 152 series (they are also the lowest
    priced)
    3. Depth finder, Hummingbird-suprised? I have found that the lower priced
models coupled with a proper transducer installation (either transom or through
hull) give the best bang for the buck.
    4. Radar, Furuno, with JRC a close second, price and performance
    5. Auto pilot, Furuno, pricey but outstanding-proper installation a must
    6. Chart plotter, Furuno or Garmin,
    7. Hailer/fog horn, if you need such a thing, the Standard LS5 is less than
half the price of Raymarine, and works better, gives you ALL the fog signals
    you will ever need.

All of the usual disclaimers, I just buy the stuff not sell it.
