Jim, please permit me to share an opposing view:

Yes it is true that if you never put a toilet's macerator pump "to the test"
it is unlikely to fail. But isn't that like owning a garbage disposal and
not using it? I have visited boats where the owners followed the practice
you describe and the stench of soiled paper sitting in their head
wastebasket can really foul the air there. I would prefer to use the
macerator pump for its intended purpose rather than pretend it isn't there.

Are there things that people can do to minimize chances of jamming the
macerator? Yep, definitely. Using the smallest amount of TP that can do
the job is one. Forcing the macerator to digest only a small amount of TP
at a time is another, certainly avoiding sanitary napkins and other items
not intended to be handled by macerators is key.

But I give visiting guests a briefing on use of the head, along with other
topics, have placed the infamous "nothing in the toilet you haven't eaten"
placard in their view and then encourage them to use the toilet as they
would at home, following the limitations I described above. In over 40
years of cruising, in all kinds of boats, both sail and power, I've had only
three failures/jams of the macerator pump. One was due to the pump's
sitting idle for over a year and it rusted. The others were do to guests
not complying with my instructions regarding limiting the amount of TP
    forced down the toilet.

But on balance, not a bad problem, given the alternative of smelling used TP
in the head every time you go there. I prefer to use the macerator for its
intended purpose, grinding up smallish amounts of human waste and TP.
Operated that way, they operate amazingly well and cause few problems, and
they leave the head stench-free, something I value.

    Just a thought,

    Bob Peterson
