When I ran a charter fleet of a dozen sailboats, we had a lot of trouble with
the Maxwell Freedom 800 RC (rope/chain), vertical shaft windlasses. The drop
to the anchor locker was evidently not enough to remove the 5/8" three strand
nylon from the gypsy. The nylon rode would jam against the stripper, often
breaking the stripper. Maxwell's California office was no help. At a boat show
later, I saw that they were using mega-braid instead of three strand in their
    demo windlass.

What are the "nylon chain inserts" you mention and how do they work?

As a solution, I went to 100 feet of chain which was usually all that was
needed in shallow west coast of Florida waters. The chain worked fine and a
tapered rope chain splice posed no problems in the event more rode was used. But
then the same jamming occurred until the nylon was stowed and the chain reached
the gypsy. Obviously, all chain would solve the problem.
