(if this posts twice, I apologize. I received an error too many reply
to's, awaiting moderator's approval.)
Many Thanks to all who responded to this question (Bob, Andina (still ?),
Jim). Our Onan is obviously older than the one's you all are describing,
our's doesn't have a circuit board anywhere. It's older than that ('68 I
think-boat is a 69). I have looked all through the manuals (not a service
manual, but an operator's manual). Our's has a rectifier at the end of the
field housing that shows previous work by the PO. I even changed the band
on the adjustable (425 + 75 ohms) resistor and have been able to fluctuate
the voltage +/- 2 volts only at the same rpm. I don't know if this
rectifier is for the
12v charge side or not. The Kill A watt shows 59.9 htz on line voltage,
but 50 on genny power. When I ramp up the genny to 60 htz, it seems like
it's reving extremely fast. Pushing 160 volts! (checked with another dvm
also) This is without a load. I'm afraid to turn anything on at that
voltage. I don't have another hertz meter available. I did plug in the
Kill A watt to a Kohler on a neighboring boat.
Showed 62.9 htz, 129 volts. Maybe old Onans only run at 50 htz when
measured by a 'modern' frequency meter. I'm dumfounded. Maybe I'll just
run it at 50 htz until I burn out a compressor <G>. We've used this genny
for the past 2 years (about 250 hrs) and have yet to burn out anything.
Anyone out there have an old Onan with a Kill A Watt meter? Curious as how
these work with the old onans.
Again, any insight is appreciated. Thanks again!!!! (still have my Kill A
Watt receipt)
Chris (pulling out what hair is left)
<snip>I just tried out our new Kill A Watt (recommended by the list-thank
you).
We now have 125 volts running at 50 hertz. Volts and hertz remain constant
when a load is applied. I can increase the rpm's and increase hertz, but
the voltage starts increasing also. <unsnip>
