Yet another collision has been reported in the Scheldt.
Mariners are reporting a sudden inexplicable loss of steering.
This has been observed more frequently since that stretch has been dredged.
Experts speculate that the culprit is bank suction effect.

This phenomena becomes more pronounced with vertical walls in close proximity
to the moving hull such as in a narrow channel where the hull almost reaches
    bottom.
I'm just wondering if any of our list members have noticed this effect when
transiting canals or dredged channels in very shallow waters in heavy
displacement hulls that nearly touch bottom.

    Regards

    Arild
