I have two friends that work for a Seattle Navel Architecture
and Marine Engineering firm that typically works on moderate sized
fishing boats, tug boats, police boats, fire boats, etc. Both of them
are trained engineers and I believe that the rest of the staff is too.
They do design work but much of their employment consists of
engineering modifications (say a converting a crabber with a large
open working deck aft to longlineing with a bait house aft and new
    rigging) and recalculating stability.
They have a very strong preference for working in a
design/build relationships with their clients where they prepare plans
with detailed specifications and then act as the owners rep.
supervising the fabrication. I think that anybody considering a large
custom project would be well advised to consider this type of
    arraignment.
