I have seen Detroit, MANN, Cummings and John Deere engines with digital
displays.
The Wired Boat system can be adapted to any engine including the older models
fitted with analog gages.
I'm often amazed how poor the general ergonomics of many helms tend to be.
This seems to be a whole area of boat design where many builders and
designers just refuse to attempt to innovate, or even do things that just
seem to be basic common sense.
It seems to me that the whole area of helm design could benefit
from a lot more fresh thinking, especially for single handers.

Part of that stems from lack of imagination and part of it has to do with
practicality.
Most engine builders offer a basic gage package in a pre assembled panel.
Ignition key, tachometer, oil pressure and water temp is the most common
arrangement.
Small engines in particular use this approach. This is almost a universal
approach for sailboats.
When a builder puts together a basic boat that has to be in sail away condition
from the factory they have to put the controls somewhere.
They take the easy way out and plunk the gages and controls front and center
where it's easiest for the assembly staff to install it.
By the time you get to the 45 foot and up sizes there is usually some
consideration given to option additions after the boat leaves the factory.
Custom builders typically provide the best results since they consult with the
owner prior to doing any console layouts.
