I had a similar discussion with a local NA. He added a little more light to
the picture, at least from a custom build perspective. His experiences were
that even if the customer spends the money to have detailed fabrication
plans drawn up, the yard seldom does it according to the plan. Instead, the
yard takes the attitude of "we've been doing this a long time, and we now
how to do it. The NA just draws pretty pictures and has no build
experience." So they go ahead and do it they way they think it should best
be built. And, in some cases they are right.
To me, this seems more like a teamwork problem then a design / build
problem. But the two sides are frequently are at odds with each other and
the customer gets caught in the middle.
