Don -
Here are some boats you might consider for enjoying the northern portion of
the Great Lakes. By the way - if you can get to the Grand Haven MI TrawlerFest
- either this year or the next, you'll have a chance to meet boaters who
travel these waters and will talk about their experiences in their own boats and
what they wished they had! You'll also see at least some of these boats.
These boats range from inside helm stations v. only outside bridge helm
stations, raised v. salon level pilot stations, and all enclosed v. considerable
outside deck/salon areas. All boats offer considerable stability to handle the
short waves characteristic of the Great Lakes under usual conditions. None, of
course, are stable enough to handle those notorious November storms that tear
apart lake freighters!
Camano 28' - cruises at 13-18k. Has upper bridge open pilot station and
lower, enclosed pilot station. Forward cabin berth and mid-cabin salon.
American Tug 34' - cruises at 13-18k. Enclosed pilothouse raised from salon
and forward cabin berth.
Albin 32+2 - cruises at 15-18k. Upper bridge open pilot station adds to lower
cabin space - mid cabin master berth and forward berth.
Albin 28 or 30' or 31' - cruises at 18-24k. Pilot station at salon level. 30'
has aft cabin berth and forward berth.
Enjoy your hunt!
Capt. Calvin Cornish
USCG licensed master
"Blue Crab" Albin 27' aft cabin
Punta Gorda, FL
