The easiest way to measure engine rpm is with a florescent light. 60 cycle
current (standard in North America) causes the the florescent bulb to
flicker at multiples of the cycle speed. I use a 110v florescent trouble
light plugged into shore power. Adjust the engine speed until exactly 1200
or 2400 rpm (whichever is nearest to your normal operating rpm). Adjust the
tachometers to the appropriate 1200 or 2400 speeds. I have found that the
old tachs on the flybridge and pilothouse never agree and never stay the
same very long. However one port and one starboard tach seem to hold the
nearly correct rpm for a longer time and we use those tachs for reference.
