    >>That leaves two sources of revenue - smaller advertisers and
    subscribers.

Don't ignore newsstand sales. Also, you could probably license the
content to other places, perhaps even licensing the content to an online
boating site (rather than go through the hassle of building and
    maintaining your own site).

    >>I have no idea what it costs to publish a full-color, glossy magazine
    at
mail it to subscribers all over the country (or world).

Uh, if you're not doing the advertising, why go the glossy route?

    >>So the question comes down to how many people are willing pay how much
$$ for a niche publication. So far it appears no one is willing to step
forward and put up their own money to test the market for our niche.

What about "Powerboat Reports" and their sister publication "Practical
    Sailor"?

    >>If there truely is such a huge market for a magazine devoted to the
interestes of the owners of older boats wouldn't one of the major
boating publishers have already responded to that market?

Publishing doesn't have high margins and these established publishers
prefer not to take risks. They only create new titles that are spin-offs
of other titles, copy a competitor, or respond to an obvious megatrend
(look at the explosive growth and collapse of "Internet" related
magazines, for example). They prefer to find new ways to milk their
existing advertiser base rather than enter an entirely new market where
they have to build new relationships. Advertising is key here: They
would look for an upfront commitment from a few major advertisers . Or
they would have to have enough other related commercial ventures to be
able to make use of "house ads", where they run their own ads if they
don't have paid insertions. On the boating front, we may be headed in
that direction with West Marine: Not only do they have a huge retail
presence - with e-commerce backup, they also have been dipping their
toes into events (Trawler Rendezvous sponsorship). And they're clearly
publishers, in this case printed catalogs. How long will it be until we
    see "West Marine Boating Magazine"?
