"How do those of you that live in a hot humid climate control moisture
and mildew?"
I have been here in the Florida panhandle for 13 years with the same boat.
I installed an air conditioner shortly after arrival from California!
However, the controls on this unit were the standard three-knob setup that
allowed me few options for humidity control beyond setting it at a fairly
high temp and letting it run when I was not aboard. The bad part was that
the pump ran all the time and clogged its strainer often.
For a few years I had a small dehumidifier bought from a RV supply company.
I set it in the sink of the forward cabin.
I also used those the small absorbent crystals that soak up water and
dissolve into a bucket hanging under a grate. Very unsatisfactory in this
climate - couldn't begin to handle the problem.
I also used to just leave the boat wide open when it was under cover at the
marina, but security was always a concern. And humidity and mold still were
a problem.
The boat is still under cover but behind my house now. Humidity and mold
are as big a problem under cover as out in the sun. But I have largely
solved the problem with two pieces of equipment.
I finally bought a digital control for my A/C which causes it to come every
four hours and blow air for 1/2 hour WITHOUT turning on the cooling pump or
compressor. Then it turns on the compressor and pump for as much as an hour
in an effort to lower the temp by two degrees.
I also have a small ozinator from Alpine Products that I run constantly - in
the cabin, not in the engine room. I turn it off and air out the boat
before occupying its interior.
Now the boat just smells fresh and feels dry whenever I enter. None of that
old boat smell at all, and this is a thirty-one year old wooden boat.
