An alternative to pickling which is advocated by AquaMarine, the makers of
our watermaker, is frequent flushing. First, always flush after making
water. This purges the salt water and various organisms that live in it
from the membrane. Then, if you don't make water for a week, just back
flush for a few minutes instead. Do this every week. They say it can be
stretched to two weeks. They advocate flushing instead of pickling because
they feel that the pickling solutions are hard on the membranes, and that
the membranes will last longer with regular back flushing then they will
with pickling. Of course this assumes that you are methodical about doing
it and that you are regularly at your boat.
