Oh right! You want US to get in the middle of THAT argument? ;)
Remember that shore water has chlorine in it anyway, or at least some
chemical that helps keep it good. I understand some are using Bromine now,
but that's for the municipal water experts here to answer.
I wouldn't think a couple of tablespoons would hurt in 100 gallons of water,
nor help for that matter. That's a pretty high degree of dilution. I put
about a cup per 100 gallons with no noticeable smell or effects. Some folks
use Iodine, but I don't have the dilution factor handy. If 2 Tb./100 gallons
works for you, by all means continue. I doubt it would hurt the pump.
The key is to run that water through the tanks on a regular basis. I used to
have a 100 gallon tank, and kept 25 gallons in it while at the marina. On
the first of every month, I shut off the "city" water and used up that 25,
then replaced it with fresh water. As long as I followed this schedule, I
never had a problem.
Oh yea, if you shut down the "city water" inlet for more than a week or so
(YMMV) be sure to flush the hose out before letting that water into your
boat. In the summer, it gets nice and warm and some really interesting green
stuff can grow in the hose.
