    In one of my boats which had a long bow sprite, dolphin striker and bob
    stay, I used the plate where the bob stay attatched as Robin
    described--however I used block which could be removed when on passage at
    the waterline--this allowed the snubber line to be varied in lenght--and
    easier to control as the chain came in and out.

    Previously I related that a 1/2" snubber had broken (32 ton boat)--this
    occured right at the thimble--the splice did not pull out.
    A splice is much better than a knot, but it is weaker than the line itself.
