Probably because sailors are more do-it-yourself oriented than typical
trawler owners (present company excepted - of course) sailing magazines offer more
hands on advice than the glossy yachting and trawler publications. I know that
the word "sail" is forbidden in the TWL but the July 2003 issue of SAIL
magazine covers several topics that have occupied a considerable amount of bandwidth
in the TWL. One article explores the difference between towing and salvage,
another delineates the piracy hot spots of the world with a map and a
description of the methods used by local brigands. A couple of articles deal with near
disaster situations. One explains how to rig and deploy a sea anchor, another
explores the use of traction kites as a mastless get home rig.
My favorite hint is the use of duct tape to remove fiberglass splinters from
hands and skin. If only I had known about it years ago it would have saved me
countless hours of itching. Why can't PASSAGEMAKER be more practical.
