A newspaper article suggested this
We have used it and it is incredible. Great for a stinky toilet also
Timsen - buy it at vet supply houses. It is really cheap - buy a bunch
of it

. My refrigerator smells terrible.I've emptied and cleaned out the drip
pan. I have washed the insides with vinegar and with baking soda. I've
even / tried prayer! Someone told me activated charcoal might work, but
1 can't find it anywhere. Please help! Liza Kaplan, Coral Springs,
By the time we reached you by phone, you had figured out you could buy
activated charcoal at aquarium supply stores. You said it seemed to be
eliminating the odor. If it doesn't, there are other remedies Action
Line and its readers have recom~ mended in the past. Wipe the inside of
the refriger~ ator with vanilla and place small dishes of it on the
shelves. You can also use coffee grounds or crum~ pled newspapers to
absorb odors. Timsen, a pow~ der you mix with water, is excellent for
removing organic~caused smells. It's available for 25 cents a pack (each
pack makes 1/2 gallon) at Paramex Vet~ erinary Supply, 38 Curtiss
Parkway, Miami Springs.
When a refrigerator develops a case of bad breath, cleaning out the drip
pan beneath it is the first thing to do. It's often the source of bad
smells. if liquid from decaying foods has leaked into the insulation,
however, you'll probably never get rid of the odor.
