A friend of mine had an incident where the engine room bilge pump merrily
pumped leaking hydraulic fluid overboard. He didn't realize it until he saw
the sheen on the water. The lesson he learned was that all bilge pumps
should have alarms on them. Lights are great, but you won't see the lights
if you're not at the helm, or on deck, or sleeping, etc. Bilge pumps that
should never come on should have a fairly urgent alarm, while the "working"
pump should have a gentle "bong" alert, like the door-ajar signal in a
fancy car. Enough sound so you know it's running, but not enough to startle
or annoy. If you get annoyed by the frequent "Bong. Bong. Bong." then maybe
you should resolve why the pump runs so frequently. This will be one of the
upgrades to the bilge pump system on Maqana when I get done with some of
the other major items. I suspect that finding the desired chime/bonger will
take much longer than actually installing it. If you have a flybridge, you
should probably have a repeater chime and at least one indicator light to
show that a bilge pump is running. Oh oh, here we go with another alarm
sound to distinguish from all the other various alarms. :)
