<<Smart Switch is a brand name, made by Aqualarm, of an electronic bilge pump
switch. I got tired of having Rule Super Switches fail, so tried the Smart
Switch. The first one failed after about 4 months (as I recall). ---
The second Smart Switch failed after about 3 months.>>
Wayne's electronic bilge pump switch problem is almost identical to mine. I
bought a similar switch, the Bilge Sentry, Model 1220, from Aim Technologies,
Inc. in Cape Coral FL. It senses water level by a probe extending into the
bilge, then operates the pump for 30 sec. after the water level drops below the
probe. The pump failed during the first season by sticking in the continuous on
mode. I contacted the factory and they told me that the earlier pumps had poor
insulation on the probe. Water penetrated the insulation causing the probe to
sense that it was constantly immersed.
I received a new redesigned switch which has now worked for the last three
years. (Knock wood).
While I applaud the company's policy of customer service, the complaint of
initial equipment failure is an old one. Few organizations give their products a
field test before releasing them on the market. It is far more cost efficient
to replace failed items than it is to maintain a R&D facility. The first wave
of consumers serves as a "beta" test panel with all the potential trouble
that this status ensues. The early bird catches the wormy apple.
