    Hi Vin,

we had an okay experience with CanAm. The driver was good, the boat
arrived in perfect condition, though there was a lot of stress about weight
and height of the boat - they permitted us for one trailer, and then
substituted another trailer, which was higher, so they threatened to wash
their hands of the whole project, until we figured out that we could turn
her around backwards so she sat lower on the trailer ... it was
unnecessarily high stress (especially because we had no options ... a delay
would have been a 3 month delay because the yard was closing for the winter
and there were no other shippers because it coincided with a big boat show)
... but at least they stuck to their estimate... another company had
provided us with an estimate before the boat was completed, and never
mentioned that their quote was to the ounce ... if we went 1000 pounds over
they had to use a bigger trailer and the price *doubled* ... it seemed
unethical to me that they did not mention that the weight we'd estimated
(and they knew the boat wasn't built yet) was the max for the small trailer.

we are 16 feet beam as well (56' overall) and we managed to do it without
any police escorts, although there was a question up to the last minute
whether we would require one for the final state. You should price driving
through Canada as well ... we were starting in Canada anyway, but the fewer
US states you go through the better. 14 foot beam is generally okay
through the whole US, but 16 foot beam requires police in some
states. Having police escorts more than doubles the price. We priced out
Michigan to east coast US and it was twice the price of Ontario to the east
coast, even though the mileage was about equal.

when the trailer height changed they were able to repermit in about 5
minutes. they were incredibly reluctant to do it, but it took no time at
all once they agreed to make the call.

    Kate
