Ralph, sorry to learn that you've been stung by yet another well-intentioned
but clueless person regarding the ever-present computer virus or worm. No
doubt the Auxiliary member who forwarded the warning to you was equally
well-intentioned and thought he/she was doing a valuable service. The
virus' creator, or in this case hoax creator, is no doubt merrily working
away on his next scheme to dupe novice users.
My method of dealing with such junk is to ignore it unless it comes from a
reliable commercial source. If Symantec, Norton or McAfee or one of the
other well-known virus detection manufacturers says it's a genuine problem,
I pay attention. Otherwise I simply ignore the warning, no matter how sweet
and innocent the sender. Once virus developers and their ilk learned that
they didn't really have to unleash actual viruses on the public, but only
needed to plant a hoax and rely on others duped into belief to "spread the
word", it became child's play for them to cause havoc.
Genuine computer viruses, worms and other disruptive software are well
documented on virus-checking sites and well-distributed ones even make the
newspaper and TV news. You'll know about them. The claims that the warning
"came from Microsoft", or "was announced by IBM" or "was verified by Intel"
are seldom accurate and only used to lend legitimacy to the hoax. The
hoax's creator is satisfied to simply tie up incredible amounts of internet
bandwidth by having the gullible email everyone they know, warning them of
the impending doom and gloom.

Subject: TWL: TWL computer files
Hi all:
Just this morning I received a warning from a Coast Guard Auxiliarist
warning
of a virus. Knowing her to be a reliable and sober source, I took the email
seriously.
I forwarded it as warned, and immediately go back replies reporting the file
to me a hoas.
It has to do with the file: jdbgmgr.exe.
Another reliable source tells me this is a debugging program and should be
on
the hard drive.
So, who do you believe?!
I hate computers.
regards to all and safe boating.
