Bob said,

We had a Telular SX TDMA Dual Mode wireless terminal installed on our
Ocean Alexander but could not successfully have it activated with a
reasonable plan. Our cruising is primarily British Columbia and Alaska
so AT&T is the best choice as they have a Canadian option which makes
calls in and out the same as if they were in the USA. However, AT&T
doesn't recognize the SX TDMA as it is dual-mode and they suggested we
switch to a Tri-mode phone (SX4A) which we have since done at a cost of
an additional $800.00! After going through that change, we again were
told by AT&T that they could not activate it as it really isn't a
phone!! Several calls to Telular were of absolutely no help. Apparently
they just sell the units; they don't care if they can be operated.

Has anyone successfully set up and activated a Telular and if so, how
and with what provider? We are frustrated that after investing
substantial sums of money all we have is two brand spanking new Telular
wireless terminals but no communication service.

Ken replied;

I actually just picked up two of the new Telular GSX5e which is the GSM
version. I installed my AT&T Sim card, and it did not work either. I
actually sent the units back to Telular and they returned them back, as
they
check out fine. They believe that there is something "non standard" in
the
AT&T network. Anyway, to make a long story short, I ended up dropping
AT&T
(paying their cancellation fee) and now use T-Mobile with the unit, and
it
works fine. I am still trying to get the GPRS high speed data
capabilities
working though :(

As far as your Canada options go with T-Mobile go, I'd contact them
directly
at 1-800-937-8997 and ask them directly. The guys at the local T-Mobile
company store were very interested in the Telular unit. I'm not sure if
T-Mobile supports TDMA though. Anyway, Good luck!
(FYI - I use the external cell antenna and amplifier from
DigitalAntenna.com
and I get 3 of 4 signal strength indicators on the Telular. If I use a
standard cell phone in my area, I get no signal to 1 bar and lots of
dropped
calls, so the external antenna and amplifier is a positive boost.

Bob replies;
Thanks for the information. It is the best lead yet and I will
definitely follow it up. I also use the Digital Cellular antenna and get
good signals. My problem has not been equipment failures but instead, it
has been been getting AT&T to recognize it and activating a normal
service plan. They think it's something strange from outer space because
it is not a "normal" hand held phone. Telular has offered several
excuses but they know that the problem is simply educating AT&T and
others about their equipment and in that regard, they are not much help.
