Coast) areas, B.C. and Alaska."
We use Verizon Mobile Office with a Qualacum cell phone and a Dell Inspiron
7500 laptop. We are snowbirds in the winter so I am Interneting while we
travel. I can get on the internet with as low as a 30% signal. I have been
able to pick up my E Mail and access the Internet on my computer while
boating in Washington State with no problem. While I am able to use the
cell phone in Canada I cannot use Mobile Office in B.C. Verizon does not
have reciprocal data transmission. I guess you could sign up with Telus
and use their data system if you were going to be there for a length of time
and communications were critical, but the cell phone coverage when you get
past the north end of Vancouver Island is non-existent until you arrive at
Prince Rupert, and signals tend to be weak when you go inland.
In Alaska we have great cell phone service most of the time however I have
not been able to get connected to the Internet. I think it is the same
problem as trying to get connected in Canada.
I am thinking of purchasing a Pocketmail unit which I understand you can use
at a pay phone or on your cell phone. Two of our friends use it when
cruising. Only problem no access to the Internet and you cannot use your
regular ISP. Your address would be joeblow@pocketmail instead of your
regular address. Might work for out of the way places (Bella Bella comes
to mind where you get no cell phone coverage but there are a couple of
phones.) Or you could use it in Alaska on your cellphone. But, alas, no TWL
mail to read each day.
