"Thank you for your post. I think this is the first really hard
information I have seen regarding cell phone -> Internet.
I presume that at your current location you have a pretty good
cell-phone signal/ Please keep us apprised of your experiences when you
are moving. Even performance as you move around the harbor would be
interesting.
The reason I ask is because I meet so many people who believe that they
will be able to keep in touch via cell phone email while actually
coastal cruising. But the reality is (or has been so far) that even
moving around in a strong signal area will degrade or render the
Internet connection inoperable. Certainly in remoter areas with weak or
no cell signal, this option will not work at all."
Dinata responds:
We use Verizon Wireless with Mobile Office on our Dell notebook computer
with an Audiovox phone. We bought the phone in Solomons, MD last
October and used it while cruising down the ICW to Marathon, FL. As I
recall, there were only two or three nights (locations) when I was not
able to get a strong enough signal to send and receive e-mail. These
were in South Carolina and Georgia, sorry I can't be more specific than
that. I have even had success when the signal looked pretty weak.
We don't move around the harbor once we get somewhere. We always keep
the computer on the boat now that we don't have to look for a phone jack
in the marina. So I can't say whether the e-mail would go through on
the other side of the harbor or not.
One feature I really like is that with the "no long-distance, no
roaming" option, I don't need to find a local number for my ISP access
every night. The same number works everywhere. That's a lot less
hassle.
