TWL: I'm Still Kicking Around

Greetings All,

Saw Joe Engel at the recent Seattle Boat Show and was gently chided for
having disappeared from the list without so much as a word of explanation.
So I thought an update email would be in order.

On July 1, Jan and I moved aboard Maqana in Seattle. There was still major
work to be done, as in none of the systems worked except for the bilge
pumps. But our new landlord wanted to move into the cottage we were
renting, so onto the boat we went. Once we moved aboard we lost regular
internet access and had to scrounge from friends or use internet cafes. As
a result, I was always at least several days behind in the list, and
frequently went a couple weeks without getting TWL.

It wasn't until 5 days after we moved aboard that we had the head working,
and it wasn't until the beginning of August that we had pressure water, hot
water, and cooking working. Refrigeration came in mid August in the form of
our new deck freezer being temporarily rigged and adjusted so it ran at 40
degrees instead of zero. The rest of the summer and early fall saw us
working non stop on the exterior trying to get as much painting and
varnishing done before the weather changed. We also got the aft deck ground
down, re leveled, and painted.

October 9, we moved the boat up to Westsound on Orcas Island for the
winter. Once here, we started working on systems. The first was getting the
refrigeration working in the galley, then getting heat installed, and all
the while running new wiring as different areas of the boat were opened up.

I think that Jan is a pretty amazing woman and very tolerant and supportive
of "my dream". Any guy that wants to know how supportive she is should show
the above paragraphs to their wife and ask if she would trade places.

So work continues, but at an "island time" pace. We're very dependent on
UPS to get the parts and supplies we need delivered. Frequently a project
comes to a screeching halt when you realize you are short a left handed
flotter valve with a short shifted sprinting arm, or some other equally
unobtainable part. Here on island, you'd be surprised how unobtainable some
simple things are... like a bronze 3/4" 90 degree street ell. So you change
gears and work on something else until you place an order with the
chandlery and UPS brings the needed parts. Then you try and pick up where
you left off.

But life here is very enjoyable. The changes from Seattle are most
pronounced. A much better community, much quieter, sunnier, and much more
beautiful with an abundance of wildlife. So while we're not cruising yet,
we've already enjoyed a much improved way of life.

The current plan is to finish up all that we can by May. We'll most
certainly still have cosmetic things to do, but the systems will be done
and we'll be seaworthy. We'll leave Orcas in the end of May (we have to,
our slip's summer resident arrives June 1.) and head down Puget Sound.
We'll attend Trawler Fest in Poulsbo, then head north to Canada for the summer.

Cheers,
Jim McCorison
