Unfortunately that's not a universal experience. One of my marina
neighbors had a similar experience with their teak cove molding with
something like a $3,500 expense. The other guy's insurance company refused
to cover it. When he spoke with his own agent about it he was told that
some companies routinely reject all claims less than $5K or some such on
the theory that it's too small for you to bother to take to court and
you'll eat it yourself (which my neighbor ended up doing).
While traveling through the Canadian canals I also heard some discussion of
how upset they were with some large American boat that had just gone
through with a big wake and damaged a bunch of boats docked along the
waterway (ripped cleats out of 16' runabouts and that sort of thing). They
said this happens a few times a year and it's rare that they get any money
from the insurance companies since the amounts are "small".
I have no personal experience with insurance claims, but what I've heard
from those who have is very mixed. Some very good (like Philip's) and some
very bad.
Bill
