As both an enlisted radio operator and SF signal company commander, I can
tell you that it takes a trained and experienced "ear" to monitor multiple
channels at one time. During a rescue mission, I found switching between
three rigs while listening to all a very draining experience - but we did
rescue the guy.
Out of a sense of duty, especially on weekdays when few boats are out on
Chesapeake Bay, we monitor 16 to help others and 13 to help ourselves.
