Cutting up the old tanks is not that big a deal, at least in my boat. I did
have to pull the engine, but the rest was pretty straight forward. I replaced
the two original tanks with 4 new aluminum tanks. They were easy to fit, and
the connecting lines at the bottom of the tanks gives a way to sump them.
While I suppose it might be somehow possible to do what you are thinking
about, I don't think it would be satisfying in the long run. When you see the
inside bottoms of your tanks, I think you will see why. You will probably
find yourself replacing the tanks after all your hassle.
