Dennis replies...

We use our 8 pound mushroom dinghy anchor, attached with a snap hook or
carabiner. We simply snap the carabiner on our 1/2 inch nylon rode after
cleating the rode off. The mushroom gradually works its way partially
down the rode, but I've never found it closer than 20 or so feet from
the primary anchor. It's easy to retrieve with a boat hook while pulling
in the rode, well ahead of the primary anchor.

The anchor does not seem to slide down the rode nearly as easily as I
would have suspected. If movement down the rode is a problem, attach it
in place with a rolling hitch. I suspect the most effective place for
the kellet is somewhere near the middle of the rode. With a chain rode
and the appropriate size carabiner a kellet can be easily attached to a
chain link as well

We use a kellet often, either in space restricted areas, or when
expecting big blows.
