"Ron,
I already had a SEARS pancake compressor that is abt $125 or so. It has the
tank , on off switch, regulator all built in. I don't recall the size of
the tank but it is several gallons. Putting all of this together separately
cannot be done for the price of the unit! I found this to be MUCH cheaper
than putting together a 12v system. That was my experience, YMMV!!
This set up makes installation easy. I built a plywood shelf and tied the
compressor down. Actually screwed dwn 3 plywood donut rings into which
each rubber foot foot of the compressor sits . Then used heavy nylon string
to hold the unit inplace. Leave space to drain the tank of water condensate.
Put a galvanized "T" in , rt. at the discharge line on the compressor. Ran
one rubber line up to the bridge where the horn is. Here I placed the elec.
solenoid switch, available at Grainger ( 1/4 inch NPT $29) and then a
short hose to the horn. Used barbed fittings to fit the hose. You will need
to put SS hose clamps in addition to the barb fittings.
Used the off the shelf air hose. Do NOT use the plastic coiled hose as it
tangles etc.
The run from the compressor to the horn is not critical, in my case the
hose run is abt. 25 ft.
Before you turn on the compressor , turn the regulator down to abt. 100 lb.
of pressure.
Overall this is an easy project.
