Subject: TWL: Leaking Fuel Tanks

I was browsing some old TWL posts the other day when I came across
several posts on leaking steel fuel tanks. All solutions involved
either trying to patch the leaky weld or complete replacement of the
tanks. I got to thinking (dangerous) and wondered if anyone on the
list had any experience with a partial replacement of the tank.
Usually, the problem is not the steel tank walls failing, but rather
pinhole leaks in the welds. The wall themselves (1/4" on our boat)
will probably outlive most of us.
What I would propose is cutting out the wall of the tank facing the
engine room. The tank could then be cleaned and fiberglass lined. A
new inside wall could then be made of fiberglass and constructed in
place. I would assume that a person would start on the bottom and lay
up horizontal strips (6" - 12") tied to the baffles and steel tank
ends until the new wall was complete. With this method, the
structural strength of the existing steel bottom, top, and ends would
provide support with the only heavy fiberglassing required being the
new wall.
I am not an expert in fiberglass installation but would think that
this would have to be a lot less expensive then the other methods
previouly proposed.
What am I missing? Your comments would be welcome.
