Our question for the List (licensed) experts is if we really want to do Ham,
should we buy a true Ham rig, i.e an Icom 756 Pro II? Or, should we stick
to the boater standard and buy an Icom 802?

Peter replies:

As an EE and long time ham I'd go for the 756. Here's why:
1. You don't see a need for commercial SSB, which in any event is seeing
les and less use today.
2. I couldn't find enough detail about the IC-802 to verify this, but most
marine SSB rigs do not provide the ability to easily change frequency 1-2
kHz up or down, a common occurrance in a ham contact (to avoid interference
- but not an issue on nets, which will be a very common use for you, I judge).
3. I'm not funded for a 756 Pro, but everything I have heard indicates that
is is the rig of choice for ham operations. The competition is a Yaesu,
FT2000 (I think). Yaesu is legendary for reliablilty problems and poor
customer support, so I'd rule that out. I have an Icom IC-706 & have used
it successfully for email (Winlink) between Puget Sound and Juneau. I
usually contacted a station in Virginia for email exchange. The 706 is
inexpensive, small and solid, but hardly perfect. The most serious
limitation I found was that it doesn't perform well in the presence of very
strong nearby (geographic) signals such as you may find in a marina where
several boats are trying to do that same thing you are.

BTW, I've heard some great war stories about your boat from son Jim.
Looking forward to meeting you, perhaps at Trawlerfest in the summer.
