TWL: Planning to attend our first real trawler fest (Slightly long)

Subject: TWL: Planning to attend our first real trawler fest (Slightly long)

To the list,

For years, my dream has been to live on a trawler and see the world. (I
have lots of years working on a nuclear submarine, but saw very little
of the world as I was submerged most of the time. So now I want to see
what I missed.) My bride of 6 years is willing to try so I need to get
the trawler right the first time because if I blow it, the dream could
fizzle.

I have been lurking on this list for years and have amassed a lot of
info from the list. Now it seems to be the time to gel all that into a
live aboard trawler.

We are planning to attend Melborne. As this is our first "real" fest, I
am looking for some guidance. (We attended Grand Haven last summer, but
could not get aboard any of the trawlers due to the rain. One day trip
was a bust!) (We are also planning to attend the fest in Md later in the
year which I understand from other listees that this is a real good one
to attend.)

Our funds are limited due to the fact I quit my job last week. (Could
not take it any more.) So the guidance I need is where to focus @
Melborne. We have seen just a few trawlers here in the Chicago area so
this is our first time that we will see many @XXX.XXX I also spent
time with Jim and Suzy Sink ("The Unsinkables") on their Nordhavn in the
middle 90s when they were on their round-the-world trip. (They were in
Izmir Turkey on the mid trip break when we met.) Their trawler design
did catch our interest

My bride and I have read the trawler fest web site and while the seminar
list is impressive, it also appears the be overwhelming. We are not sure
which ones to focus on given our current knowledge level. We also feel
that we need to spend time on the trawlers to see what might work for us
and what might not. Not knowing the number and type of trawlers that
will be there, we cannot seem to determine if the 4 hours after the
seminars is enough time to see them all and work through the issues of
living aboard.

What we think we know so far is that our dream trawler is to have a
walk-in salon from the main deck with no starts and a galley that my
bride can look out while underway. It needs to have only one engine,
large fuel tank & a very well protected rudder and prop. It needs to
have a generator of some type so that creature comforts are available.
Would prefer either steel or fiberglass but needs to be well founded.
Would prefer a pilot house design so that if my bride can have lights on
in the salon if underway @XXX.XXX As we have no kids, the trawler
has to be handled by the both of us. The master cabin should have a
queen berth and the guest cabin should have twin single berths. Would
prefer two heads, but can live with one shower. I postulate a trip
around the great lakes loop, a trip to Bermuda and around the Caribbean,
and a trip up the west coat to Alaska. (Not 100% sure will take trawler
through the canal or not.)

We have also looked at nearly all the trawler companies' web sites we
can find, but know from our current boat (35' express cruiser) that
looking @XXX.XXX

So need some guidance to decide what to focus on. Any help would be
greatly appreciated I am looking for off list or on-list responses.

Thanks to all in advance!

Lee and Zehra

PS: (f anyone can recommend other hotels to stay at besides the one that
is hosting the fest, that would also be appreciated.
