A bad accident occured last month... Maybe we all need to take a look
around our boats for unforseen safety hazards. I know how I will spend a
good part of the day.....jd

JUPITER The yacht owner who suffocated with his wife last week at a Jupiter
marina had an amputated leg and was not wearing his prosthetic leg when he
apparently fell and activated a fire-control system that flooded the ship's
engine room with carbon dioxide.
John Robertson, 56, and his wife, Andreaija Robertson, 50, were found on
board their vessel the Peg Leg on Jan. 19.
The seasonal residents from Big Fork, Mont., were in the hallway of a
utility room and had apparently been painting the engine room of the
58-foot Hatteras.
Police said John Robertson apparently was knocked unconscious by the carbon
dioxide. His wife apparently was trying to rescue him when she was overcome
by the gas, police said.
Detective Amy Facchine, public information officer for Jupiter police, said
autopsies performed by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner showed no
signs of foul play.
Toxicology tests from blood and tissue samples won't be completed for about
two months, she said.
Hank Nordlinger, a professional boat captain who maintained the Robertsons'
vessel at Cable Marine in Plantation for the past four years, said the
couple had picked up the Peg Leg in November. He said the Robertsons
usually spent two months in Jupiter before cruising to the Bahamas, Mexico
and South America.
Nordlinger said the couple were well-liked at the Plantation boatyard, and
the news of their death has shocked everyone who knew them.
"I have never worked for a nicer, more down-to-earth person in all those
years," he said. "John was fully capable of running and maintaining
anything on his boat."
