Unfortunately, most boat designs fail to provide a good place outside the
engine room.

Here is a couple of ideas to consider. Place the batteries as low as
possible in the bilge since this is the coolest place in the compartment.

If possible. locate the batteries close to where the cool air enters the
engine room. Install a separate vent line to carry away any battery gas.
Do not rely on normal engine room ventilation to do the job.

Install a radiant heat barrier between the batteries ( or battery box ) and
the engine(s) and exhaust manifolds - pipes - ducts.

Some production boats provide a shallow battery tray and a cover over the
postgs but leave the sides of the battery exposed.
The dark case is a good heat sink which will soak up any radiant heat from
the engine.

Provide separate or additional cool air flow to the battery area if heat
buildup is a problem.

A long time ago we discussed the idea of water cooled battery cases, but the
concept wouldn't wash. :-)))

Cheers

Arild
