This was a response to a private email with a series of questions about
cell phones and wireless communications. I'm not quoting the original,
since it was sent to me privately.
Any brand of computer, laptop, notebook, desktop, will work with the right
phone/provider combination. You have to start with the provider - get one
with good coverage for the area you're going to cruise in (Verizon on the
east coast is arguably the best, but even then there are some spotty areas
with weak coverage).
Next, make sure you get a phone that allows a connection to your computer -
not all do. Look for one with a data cable connection. You can't rely on
the local or corporate wireless service rep for the correct information
here - check with the phone manufacturer online for the most reliable
information.
Then buy the "data kit" (I don't know what else to call it) from the
wireless provider. It will include a cable to connect your phone with the
computer, and the software you'll need to do it.
You have to work with two variables - the wireless provider and the phone
manufacturer - to get everything to work together.
